"Fade" is one of the most-requested words in any barbershop — but it covers a whole family of cuts. Here's a plain-English breakdown so you can walk in knowing exactly what to ask for.

What a fade actually is

A fade is a gradual blend from longer hair on top down to shorter hair (or skin) at the sides and back. The magic is in the transition — a clean fade has no harsh lines, just a smooth gradient.

The main types

• Low fade: starts just above the ears — subtle and classic.
• Mid fade: begins around the temples — the most versatile.
• High fade: starts high on the sides for a bold, modern look.
• Taper fade: a gentler fade focused around the ears and neckline.
• Zero / skin fade: blended all the way down to the skin for the sharpest finish.

How to ask for one

Tell your barber two things: where you want the fade to start (low, mid, high) and how short at the bottom (a guard length, or all the way to skin). Bring a photo if you've got one — it never hurts.
